Electrolysis is the method of removing individual hair from the face or the body. It involves inserting a very fine probe into the hair follicle in order to destroy the growth centre of the hair with either of chemical or heat energy. Post this, the hair is removed with the help of tweezers.

Electrolysis is most commonly done for eyebrows, face, abdomen, thighs and breasts.

Selecting the right Electrologist Considering the nature of the procedure, it is very important that you do enough prior research about the dermatologist or Electrologist i.e. the person who will perform the procedure. This is because any wrongly executed procedure will result unnecessary discomfort, pain and sometimes even scars.
You can also do primary research about the procedure specially. Ask your practitioner if they do needle electrolysis- the only permanent hair removal solution. If they tell you that they will be using electronic tweezers or photoepilators for the same, be cautioned as that is not a permanent procedure.

  • Science behind the electrolysis
  • Are all electrolysis hair removal system same?
  • How long will electrolysis session take?

For most people, today’s methods don’t cause a lot of pain, but it can hurt. If you find it too uncomfortable, your doctor may be able to give you a topical anesthetic.
The total number of sessions required depend largely on the following factors:
  • Hair density of the area being treated
  • Hair Growth rate
  • Size of the area being treated
  • Skin Sensitivity
The session duration for people usually varies between 20-50 minutes.

Very minimal. As each individual has a different tolerance level, one may feel the heat and it may sting when the current is applied.

It works on all skin and hair types. Electrolysis is ideal for hairs that cannot be treated by lasers or laser hair reduction, especially white / gray hairs on the chin, upper lip areas.
Small electric current is passed through fine needles which destroys the dermal papillae, the matrix, and the bulge of the hair follicle completely to give you silky smooth skin.
The machines differ from manual to digital in technology, but electrology remains the same, there are three modalities like Galvanic (direct current produces a chemical reaction), Thermolysis (alternative current produces heat) and Blend method which combines both. They all result in permanent hair removal.

It ranges from 15minutes to an hour depending on the area and quantity of hair

Some patients experience redness or scabbing after the procedure is done. However both of them disappear in a matter of few days at most.
Antibiotic creams, Soothing gels, cold packs can be applied for 3 to 5 days to speed up the healing process. Avoid makeup and intense sun exposure for 48 hours.
The treated area will be prone to infections as the follicles remain open for the next 24 hours after procedure. It is thus advised that the person should try to keep the treated area covered and not touch it frequently. After-care schedule as suggested by the dermatologist should be followed religiously to preventany further infections.
Several months to a year, depending on the area to be treated.
You may shave it or cut it.
It is a very inexpensive way to solve unwanted hair problem permanently and the cost is much less in the long run as compared to other never ending processes like waxing, shaving, depilatory Creams, plucking, threading etc.
