Pore are the dilated openings of the oil glands through which the skin transacts with the external environment. This transaction mainly involves excretion of extra sebum produced in the oil glands.
Each and every person has pore on their skin, the problem however comes when these pore start getting large due to excess sebum generation, hence becoming large enough in the process to be easily visible giving the skin a textured look. - Open pore can be a real problem for many people. They can sometimes be visible and unattractive.
- Pore are tiny openings in the skin that provide a way for the oil glands underneath to lubricate and protect the surface of the skin. This oil forms a protective layer over the skin and prevents moisture loss and helps to keep the skin soft and resilient. It also helps to prevent injury and environmental damage.
- The follicle leads from within the skin to the surface of the skin and may contain a hair within it. The “hole” on the surface of the skin through which the hair emerges is the “pore” and oil flows on to the skin surface through this pore. The diameter of the tubule forms the pore and when the tubule dilates (widens) it gives the impression of being wide open. When the tubule contracts, it gives the impression of tightening and “closing”. pore do not have doors that “open” and “close”, but this is a descriptive way of describing how they work. The excessive production of oil and its flow causes the oil glands to enlarge and cause an enlargement of the tubule which in turn causes the pore to appear larger and crater like. This causes the skin to look and feel coarse and thick in texture.
- Open pore is a common problem that also leaves the skin prone to infections, resulting in painful acne and boils.
- The skin pore have the key role of providing an outlet for flushing out water, salts and toxins. When the toxic cellular waste is trapped in the skin it leads to poor skin health, infections and other disorders. Often, when our skin pores have to cope with an unusually high and excessive secretion, they enlarge in size giving the skin an unseemly look.
- Since the size of your pore is inherited, it cannot change. You can make them appear smaller by keeping them empty of plugs that are formed by the accumulation of sebum, dead skin cells and Bacteria, so that the oil can flow freely. The treatment of Open Pores:
Chemical Peels: Chemical Peels help in removal of excess oil and dirt from the face and also in controlling the sebum production. Regular chemical peels such as Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) peels, Salicylic Acid Peels and Vitamin A peels are recommended for Open Pores Treatment.
Mesotherapy and Mesobotox: This method boasts of one of the highest success rates in open pore reduction. A tiny calculated amount of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and Botox is injected directly into the designated area using micro-needles. The results are visible within a period of 3 to 4 days after the procedure and a reduction in open pores to an extent of up to 80% can be seen.
The results last for about 2 to 3 months post the date of the injection after which the treatment needs to be repeated again as per the requirement.
Microneedling: This process involves puncturing the skin with micro needles in order to stimulate the skin to start with its recovery by producing collagen. This stimulation helps not just the punctured skin but also the skin nearby to recuperate.
Usually 4-6 sittings of the procedure at the interval of one to one and a half month are done. The skin is first numbed by application of an anesthetic cream and then the microneedling is done.
The procedure leaves the treated skin to be red for up to 2 days after the procedure.

Radio Frequency: The process involves use of medicated radio frequency waves to shrink the open pores. The effectiveness of the treatment is very high, so much to the extent that the smaller pores become almost invisible while the larger ones become small enough to be not noticed till paid attention to. The treatment requires sessions to be repeated at a fortnightly to monthly basis depending upon the density of the open pores

What causes Large Pore of Face?
As discussed above, the “holes” on the surface of the skin through which the hair emerges or in short the hair follicles are the pore. Now pore don’t really have gates which open or close, instead the pore contract or expand to accommodate the oil secretion, which gives them the name of either closed or open pores.
- The excessive oil production and hence the flow causes the pores to expand. This continuous expansion results in the nearby areas losing their elasticity and the pores become what we call the “open pores”
- And it is not always the excess oil secretion to be blamed. Genetics also has a role to play and some people have large pores naturally.
- Thickening of the skin due to dirt and oil settling on it or due to sun damage is also a reason for people to have large or open pores. Though in this case, there is a probability that the pores just appear large and are not actually like that. Regularly cleaning up the skin can hence be of use to such people.

Do the pore open and close?
As mentioned above, the pore do not have open and shut doors. They just contract and expand based on how they are being treated. Excess sebum generation and hence excretion causes them to expand while when cleaned, they appear contracted.
Can the open pore be minimised or shrunk?
